Mandate, Policies and Programming:
A SPACE has a 30 year history of multi-disciplinary artist-run activity. The organization's mandate encompasses the investigation, presentation, and interpretation of contemporary art forms, diverse disciplines and theories.
Since 1982, A Space has maintained a politically engaged, issue oriented programming direction that is inclusive of a wide range of media, disciplines and issues. The Board of Directors and membership are committed to translating the organization's mandate into active policies and programming - to develop work that crosses disciplines, cultures, abilities, gender and sexual orientation, as well as work in new media and technologies.
Programming priorities are set at the annual planning meeting, when a specific focus or call for submissions is developed. Policies such as the payment of standard artist fees (1982), anti-censorship (1984), anti-racism (1985) and access (1993) policies are implemented by the Board of Directors and become integral to programming.
