Day of Mourning Banner

A banner to commemorate workers injured and killed on the job was made by members of the Durham Region Labour Council with artist, Carole Condé. The design is based on two major symbols for the Day of Mourning: a canary in a cage and the tree of life. These were combined with symbols for the "right to know" about unsafe jobs and materials and "the right to refuse" unsafe work. Each of the approximately 50
union locals in the Labour Council made one of the leaves that make up the tree of life. The banner will lead the march and be featured at the Day of Mourning ceremonies at Oshawa City Hall in April 2000, and will travel around the region as part of a campaign to raise awareness about job safety.
