Breaking
Ground: The 1960 Hoggs Hollow Disastaster
On March
17, 1960 five Italian immigrant workers lost their lives constructing
a watermain tunnel at Hoggs Hollow, near Old York Mills Road and Yonge
Street. This tragic accident mobilized the people in the building trades
in Ontario to form stronger unions and to help change safety regulations
on constuction sites forever. Breaking Ground is a 7’ x 20’ fabric mural,
conceived and designed as a community arts project and memorial to the
five men,.by artist Laurie Swim.
