Community Art Panel Discussion Round Table and Video Presentation
Saturday, June 17, 2 pm

Andrea Fatona/Dan Fortin
Nicolas Gomez Perez
Amelia Jiminez
Sergio Valdez Ruvalcaba
Moderated by Florencia Berinstein

The panel discussion brings together artists and participants from two A Space programmes in the community art biennale CAB 2000. Their community art practices are informed to a great extent by their geographical and political location.

Andrea Fatona worked with students in Peterborough on can racism, a project that addresses environmental racism. Fatona is a video artist and curator; Dan Fortin is a grade 9 student at Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School. Amelia JimŽnez is a visual artist and educator. Together with the Women's Programme of the Centre for Spanish Speaking People she investigated how personal history, age, gender, family and culture help form and shape our identity in the piece Obstinate Memory.

Nicolas Gomez Perez is a young community activist from Ocosingo, Chiapas, where he is studying communication. Sergio Valdez Ruvalcaba teaches communication at the Autonomous University in Mexico City. Both worked on the Taniperla mural which was destroyed by the Mexian army in 1998 in Chiapas. Their presentation will include footage shot by Nicolas of celebrations in his community.

Florencia Berinstein is a visual artist and community arts practitioner who has done various projects with youth. She has been involved in the Programming and Executive Committees of the Community Arts Biennale and is currently working on The Summer 2000 Project, a queer youth visual arts/theatre and queer history project.
